Today, 25 March 2014, on the Solemnity of the Annunciation of our Lord, at 12:00 (Time of Rome = 2:00 pm in Harare) His Holiness Pope Francis, has appointed Mons. Marek Zalewski, (Titular Archbishop of Africa), Nuncio Apostolic to Zimbabwe.
Mons. Marek zalewski, son of Jan Zalewski (deceased) and Klara ( Krucynska) Zalewska, was born on 2nd February in Augostow (Poland). After two years of his philosophical studies at the Major seminary in Lomza, Poland (1983-1985), he did Theology at the Metropolitan seminary in Florence (Italy) from 1985-1989). On the 27th May 1989 he was ordained to the priesthood at St. Michael Archangel’s Cathedral in Lomza, Poland.
From 1989-1991, Mgsr. Zalewski served as an assistant parish Priest at St. Maria’s parish in the Archdiocese of Florence (Italy0. In the fall of 1991, he went to Rome for Doctorate Studies in Canon Law, whuch he completed in 1995 at Pontificia Universita Gregoriana (Gregorian University); at the same time he pursued language courses and the internal program of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical academy.
In July 1995 he joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See and served, in different capacities, in different diplomatic missions:
– Nunciature in Central African Republic (1995-98)
– Diplomatic Mission to the United Nations Organisation – New York (1998-2001)
– Nunciature in Great Britain (2001-2004)
– Nunciature in Germany (2004-2008)
– Nunciature in Thailand (2008-2011)
– Nunciature in Singapore (2011-2012)
– Nunciature in Malaysia (2012-2014)
Besides his mother tongue, Mons. Zalewski speaks Italian, English and French.
